Connecting Rod Processing Line
Last year, we visited a connecting rod manufacturer whose old production line was more than ten years old. Transfer between processes relied entirely on workers pushing handcarts, and each person walked over 20,000 steps a day. Even worse, the connecting rods often collided with each other during handling, leaving tiny dents all over the surface, so the appearance pass rate stagnated at around 85%. The workshop supervisor complained to us that customers complained about the surface quality every time they came for an audit, but the old line had no automatic conveying function, and they did not know where to start with the retrofit.
Later, we suggested trying this special conveyor belt. The installation did not require altering the existing equipment layout – we simply added a few conveyor sections between the grinding machines and connected them. After that, the connecting rods could move forward step by step on their own. The reciprocating stroke is 12 mm. Although each step looks very small, the cumulative speed is not slow and fully matches the machining rhythm of the grinding machines. What pleased the workshop supervisor most was that, after the conveyor belt was put into use, there were no more handling-induced surface bruises, and the appearance pass rate jumped to over 98%. Moreover, the workers no longer had to run around pushing carts, and their labour intensity was greatly reduced.
Looking at the details: a liquid collection tray is installed under the belt, made of 1 mm thick steel plate with a spray-painted finish. Previously, the floor was always oily, and the cleaning staff had to mop it several times a day. Now the oil drips into the tray and is emptied regularly – the workshop is much cleaner. This retrofit project took less than two weeks from start to finish, with a modest investment but very significant results.
